This past week, The Washington Post released a jarring article about the rising student
mental health crisis. The call for help from students, parents, and educators in one
school district was heightened after three 15-year-old girls took their own life within a
three-week period. With a lack of mental health professionals and school funding,
schools are falling behind in meeting students’ mental health needs.
School administrators are scrambling for ideas to reach students who are struggling the
most and considering school-based wellness centers, calming rooms, and expanding
Social Emotional Learning (SEL).
According to the article, “The federal spending plans of 5,000 school districts nationally
show that more than one-third intend to bring new mental health professionals into
schools, and around 30 percent plan to fund social-emotional learning efforts, according
to an analysis by FutureEd.”
The importance of our work is growing as people are calling for schools to do more
about the mental health crises. Beyond Differences’ powerful SEL programs and youth
leadership training are aimed to help students understand and regulate their emotions.
